Tesco is appealing for in store donations this weekend to help communities in need over Christmas.

The major retailer will collect non perishable items in 115 stores from Friday December 1-Sunday December 3. Since 2013, €1.7 million has been donated through the annual appeal.

Items requested from shoppers include pasta, rice, cereals as well as toiletries and nappies. Donations will go towards vital charities including the Muslim Sisters of Eire and St Vincent de Paul.

Tesco spokesperson Rosemary Garth said: "We are urging customers who are in a position to do so to get involved in this year’s Christmas Appeal. Customers can do this by picking up one additional item during their shop and donating it to the Christmas Appeal trolleys located in Tesco stores nationwide, or by purchasing a donation bundle online."

The Tesco campaign will also run online for its second consecutive year. Customers will also have the option to purchase a €2.50 and/or €5 bundle for donation on the Tesco site.

For physical donations, items should be dropped into the Christmas Appeal trolley located at the store exit.
