The HSE has urged those using heroin to stay extra vigilant after a jump in overdoses in Dublin.

Sinn Fein councillor Daithi Doolan previously claimed that 13 people were sent to St James Hospital in the past day following heroin use. The HSE is now seeking to establish the exact cause behind the alarming number of overdoses.

A HSE spokesperson confirmed they have obtained and are now awaiting test results on drug samples. It is understood the problem is isolated to Dublin city centre.

HSE's National Clinical Lead of Addiction Services Eamon Keenan said: "We ask that people are extra cautious during this period while we identify what may be leading to overdoses. We ask service providers to notify their service users who may be at increased risk and help support them to reduce harms during this time. "

Service users are asked to avoid buying new batches or sources of heroin due to unknown risks. The HSE also encouraged those affected to contact their doctor about accessing naloxone, a medication which reverses some drug overdoses.

The HSE will continue to monitor the ongoing crisis. People can ring the HSE's Drug and Alcohol Helpline on 1800 459 459 or email helpline@hse.ie for further advice.
